Keeper and defender do well in Jersey tournament

Middlesex Wanderers' latest tour, between 23rd and 26th May, was to Jersey for the four-team Jacksons International Trophy tournament, as well as a veteran’s match. Matt Nolan and George Quarrington-Carter both took part, and Wanderers’ secretary Keith Masters has reported that both did well. George played in midfield as well as at centre-back. Wanderers’ results were:

Jersey 1 Middlesex Wanderers 1 (23/5/19, Springfield Stadium)
The first half was dominated by Jersey and it was only the heroics of Wanderers’ man-of-the-match Matt Nolan that kept their hungry forwards at bay. Matt, however, was finally beaten in the 40th minute when Kieran Lester got behind the Wanderers defence and netted into the bottom corner.

The second half saw a completely different Wanderers team, dominating the half and going close on several occasions. The equaliser eventually came in the 78th minute when excellent work down the right by D’Sean Theobalds produced a great cross which was turned into his own net by Jersey defender James Queree.

Starting XI: Matt Nolan (Enfield Town), James Folkes (Tonbridge Angels), Jaye Rolfe (Welwyn GC), Dean Inman (Kingstonian), Tom Bonner (Dartford, captain), D’Sean Theobalds (Tonbridge Angels), Khale Da Costa (St Albans City), Josh Urquart (Harlow Town), Jon Clements (Tring Athletic), Dernell Wynter (Potters Bar Town), Ryan Horne (Bury Town).

Middlesex Wanderers 1 Republic of Ireland 2 (25/5/19, Springfield Stadium)
This was the toughest game on the tour, the early exchanges a good indicator of what was to come. Ireland took the lead in the 19th minute through Craig Walsh, but the lead was short lived, and some good work from D’Sean Theobalds after which he finished with a fierce short from the edge of the penalty area levelled the scores.

Both sides went on to produce some excellent and exciting football, and what turned out to be the winning goal came at the start of the second half when a mix up in the Wanderers defence enabled Walsh to score his second. Despite exerting some pressure, Wanderers were denied another equaliser.

Starting XI: Matt Nolan, James Folkes, Carl Mensah (Tring Athletic), George Quarrington-Carter (Enfield Town), Tom Bonner (captain) Kyran Clements (Bury Town), Khale Da Costa, D’Sean Theobalds, Rob Laney (Wingate & Finchley), Dernell Wynter, Mike Jones (Hungerford Town).

Middlesex Wanderers 2 Northern Ireland 1 (26/5/19, Springfield Stadium)

A fairly uneventful first half ended goalless. After the break, Wanderers took the lead in the 50th minute through D’Sean Theobalds, and Dernell Wynter added a second in the 82nd minute. Northern Ireland pulled one back a minute later through Ryan Campbell, but Wanderers held on to win the match.

Starting XI: Matt Nolan, Jaye Rolfe, Josh Urquart (captain), Kyran Clements, Dernell Wynter, George Quarrington-Carter, D’Sean Theobalds, Mike Jones, Jon Clements, Dean Inman, Ryan Horne.
