Hanwell force FA Cup replay
Hanwell Town 0-0 Enfield Town
Town had to settle for a Tuesday (19th September) replay after coming away from West London with nothing to show for their second half domination. The scheduled Velocity Trophy game against Hertford Town at the QES will now be played at a later date.
Lining up with Mickey Parcell, Darren Purse and Danny Rumens at the back, with Mario Noto and Jack Higgs providing protection in front, Town applied plenty of endeavour in the first period but created chances were at a premium. After the break, they took the game to Hanwell and can count themselves unlucky not to have broken the deadlock at the first time of asking.
On a sunny afternoon on a good surface, with the returning Aaron Greene prominent on the left, Ryan Blake forced an early corner which was dealt with by home keeper Xavi Comas, who went on to have a busy afternoon. He was called into action soon afterwards to save a right-footed shot from Greene while, at the other end, Joe Wright dealt with an effort from Jesse Kewley-Graham.
A fine cross from the left by Drew Roberts just eluded the head of Simon Thomas and then Mario Noto fired well wide. Gareth Risbridger fired across the visitors’ goal and Glen Yala escaped the attentions of Dan Rumens but his cross drifted wide. In between, Rumens’ header was tipped over by Comas.
On the half-hour mark Drew Roberts tried setting up Sam Youngs but the midfielder was crowded out. Two minutes later, from a Greene corner Roberts smashed a shot against the Hanwell crossbar. Youngs then had another shot saved by Comas from Parcell’s cross. Wright was sold short by an underhit back pass, but the danger was averted by the retreating defenders.
Half-time: Hanwell Town 0 Enfield Town 0
As they had done in the last couple of matches, Town upped the ante after the break and Blake was blocked after he had run onto a through ball. He then had an effort saved after being set up by Darren Purse. Roberts had a header saved and Purse headed over. Nick Turner cleared from Greene as Town continued to strive for the all-important opening goal.
Hanwell were not out of it by any means and looked dangerous on the counter. Robin Nicholls’ free kick flew over the visitors’ bar but the majority of the possession and chances was overwhelmingly in favour of the Bostik Premier side. Blake had another right foot shot saved by Comas, who also dealt with a Noto effort from distance. With seven minutes left on the clock Blake was left cursing his luck when he rattled the home crossbar, and then substitute Montell Moore set up another sub Ben Ward-Cochrane whose effort was smothered by Comas.
Wright gave Town’s away following palpitations when he elected to punch, rather than collect, a dangerous ball into the box, but he recovered well and the danger was averted. As time ticked away a precise Rumens effort was cleared off the line, and the full-back then had a final header, yet again saved by Comas, at the death. All back to the QES, then, when Town will be hoping to make home advantage count.
