Town triumph in Velocity Trophy
Enfield Town 1 Hertford Town 1 (9-8 pens)
Town progressed in this season's Velocity Trophy on Tuesday night, as they beat Hertford Town 9-8 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the regular ninety minutes writes Aaron Patel.
The game got off to a bright start for Town, Montell Moore looking lively in the opening exchanges, as did Mickey Parcell, whose cross went unrewarded early on. As the game approached the tenth minute, Town were having the better of possession and were constantly driving forward. However they lacked the decisive pass.
In the 11th minute Hertford striker Ricky Light attempted to chip Town keeper Joe Wright from outside the box to no avail. This was the visitors’ first effort on goal of the night, as they rarely threatened in the first-half. Following another good spell from Town, they were served with a flurry of set-pieces. Their best chance from a dead ball came from a corner, which was swung in by Ben Ward-Cochrane but headed wide by Taylor McKenzie.
A good deal of Town's play was coming from the flanks with Ben Ward-Cochrane working extremely hard but with no success. Montell Moore also saw his effort from distance sail wide, as Hertford rode their luck at times.
On 25 minutes Hertford caught a rare sight of goal. Daniel Bond managed to get in behind the Town backline but saw his effort go just wide of the far-post. However it was rare moment for the visiting side, as Town soon resumed their domination. With fifteen-minutes to go until half-time, Town continued to press for the opening goal and once again Ward-Cochrane at the centre of it all after a good exchange with Parcell, but another opportunity went begging. Skipper Simon Thomas then headed over and then on the stroke of half-time Moore's low driven effort from outside the box flew narrowly wide as a frustrating half drew to a close.
Half-time: Enfield Town 0 Hertford Town 0
Town picked up where they left off after the break, Ward-Cochrane's effort on goal being turned behind by keeper Simon Dent and, in the 51st minute a Parcell effort smacked against a post.
Somewhat against the run of play the visitors took the lead on the 56th minute, Bond pouncing on a defensive mistake to find himself through one-on-one and beating Joe Wright in the Town goal.
Following Hertford's opening goal they visibly gained confidence and stepped up their intensity coming forward with more purpose, and Town tracking back more often in the game at this point.
In the 68th minute, debutant Adam Martin's cross was headed inches wide by Ward-Cochrane as Hertford stood firm. Around fifteen minutes left, following an exchange of words with the officials, Hertford manager Gavin Kelsey was sent to the stands by referee Stephen Bates.
As time was fast running out for Town in their search for an equaliser, Ward-Cochrane blazed wide. But he got his reward with less than two minutes remaining. After sub Jack Hockney's shot from outside the box had been saved superbly by Dent, Ward-Cochrane shortly afterwards bundled home an equaliser for Town on the 89th minute to make it 1-1.
In the penalty shoot-out, scorers for Town were: Simon Thomas, Ben Ward-Cochrane, Jack Higgs, Dan Rumens, Ryan Blackman, Joe Wright, Adam Martin, John Kyriacou and Rob Bartley,
For Hertford, the successful takers were Joe O'Brien, Daniel Bond, Charlie Ruff, Matthew Thomson, Ben Andreos, Jay Lovell, Daniel Palmer, Ollie Sharman, while Brett O'Connor hit the outside of the post, which was tough on Hertford as they had pushed Town all the way.
