Bognor Regis Town 1 Enfield Town 2

Match report by John Dolan

It was a case of a new month and a new purpose as Town picked up a win at Bognor Regis, at the sixth time of asking over the years.

After a November to forget, Town welcomed Muhammadu Faal to the ranks, and he started in the no 10 shirt alongside Billy Bricknell in a 4-4-2 formation. Mickey Parcell played wide right as Sam Hatton returned at full back. Aaron Greene played wide left replacing Sam Chaney who was unavailable.

It took 14 minutes for the first serious attack on the Bognor goal as Aaron Greene got on the end of Billy Bricknell’s cross, but his shot from the angle was deflected over for a corner that was cleared. Bognor, not enjoying the best of spells themselves, responded with some threatening attacks mainly ending in shots that were relatively comfortable to handle for Joe Wright.

At this point, the game was open but Town were showing more purpose on the ball than the Rocks. Gary Charman gave the ball away in middle of park to new boy Faal on 24 minutes, and he showed that has a turn of pace before getting in a dangerous cross that was cleared for a corner at the near post. Faal followed this up a couple of minutes after hitting a volley that was blocked after some good work from Mickey Parcell.

The deadlock looked set to last until the break, when Bognor’s no 2 Calvin Davies made a strong run down the right and eluded a couple of tackles to get in a strong near-post cross which was met by Mason Walsh who flicked the ball past Wright to give Bognor the lead. A goal from nothing, and a blow to give a goal away just before half-time for the second game running.

Town started the second period on the front foot as Remi Sutton sent Aaron Greene on a run down to the left but Faal’s subsequent shot was off target. Bognor’s Bradley Lethbridge got in a shot from edge of penalty area but Wright gathered. In the 55th minute, Faal held the ball up and found Parcell wide on the right, but his cross flew across the home six-yard box with no Town player on the end of it. Another shot from Lethbridge was also wide as the game was beginning to get stretched.

A great Sam Hatton tackle just beyond the hour mark started another move from the visitors, which ended with Greene’s cross-cum-shot tipped over by home keeper Dan Lincoln. Bognor’s Mason Walsh then embarked upon a run down the left and cut inside, and his cross shot just missed the visitors’ near post.

On 65 minutes Sam Youngs replaced Parcell, as Town switched to 3-5-2 in search of an equaliser. As it turned out, it only took three more minutes as Aaron Greene beat his full back and produced a fine chipped cross to the back post which was expertly head into the bottom corner by Billy Bricknell.

The hosts reacted well, forcing a trio of corners, all of which Town managed to clear, thanks mainly to Wright punching one away and tipping a subsequent shot over the bar.

With ten minutes or so left, Greene was replaced by Bilal Sayoud, closely followed by Liam Hope replacing Billy Bricknell. Once again a substitution saw a positive result within a couple of minutes; Ryan Blackman won a second ball from a corner and volleyed in a shot from twelve yards over Lincoln. Bognor’s supporters thought they saw a handball, but referee Shelby Elson added to his hitherto unhappy relationship with them by ignoring their pleas, as he did later on when they appealed in vain for a foul in the box on Jimmy Muitt.

The impressive Muitt tried his best to equalise with a low shot arrowing towards the far post at the death, but Wright claimed it, and one of his famous ball-gathering falls to the ground followed. Town managed the game well from this point to grab all three very welcome points.
