Town endured a nightmare evening, undoubtedly beaten by the better side, but again not taking a number of chances; when the scoreline was goalless in particular.

From Saturday’s starting line-up, Mickey Parcell came in for Aaron Greene, with Lewis Taaffe switching over to the left. Town controlled lengthy spells of the first half with the visitors being restricted to very few chances, but the second half was a totally different story, compounded by Sam Hatton receiving his marching orders for handling a goalbound effort in the 48th minute.

A bright enough start, following a minute’s silence in memory of former Isthmian League Secretary, Chairman and President Alan Turvey, saw shots by Taofiq Olomowewe and Rian McLean blocked following a flighted free kick from Taaffe. That set the pattern for the majority of the half, with a number of home corners won, and some resolute defending by the visitors.

After 12 minutes Sam Youngs fed Billy Bricknell, who fizzed a left-foot effort towards goal and Kleton Perntreou parried it before it was cleared. Then on 18 minutes Parcell nodded another long, floated Taaffe free kick back into the six yard box but again a defender’s boot was first to the ball. Bricknell then set up Ryan Blackman, who hit a powerful drive that was well saved to his right by Perntreou. Worthing’s best chances came from a couple of left-footed inswinging free kicks from the right by Sam Rents, although both were dealt with reasonably comfortably.

Olomowewe got his head to a corner but the ball bounced wide of an upright before Worthing took the lead against the run of play. David Ajiboye was given far too much space down the right and, after reaching the edge of the box, he cut the ball inside for Jesse Starkey to apply the finish. Sam Chaney replaced Sam Youngs who had pulled up limping and, approaching the break, Bricknell collected a pass from him, but his shot was kept out by the legs of Perntreou. Matt Johnson’s low cross-cum-shot from the left evaded everyone and Taaffe shot wide to complete the final action of the half.

Half-time: Enfield Town 0 Worthing 1

After the Mackerel Men had made a couple of half-time substitutions, there was a pivotal moment when a shot from the visitors was kept out by Sam Hatton’s right hand, for which he was rightly red carded. Joe Wright made a fine save, slightly to his left, from Ajiboye’s spot kick, however.

For the second match running, and despite his penalty miss, the opposition’s number 7 continued to be the primary danger source for Town. A second injury of the night – Mickey Parcell this time, who went down seemingly clutching his hamstring – led to a defensive reshuffle, with Dan Rumens coming on and Rian McLean moving out to the right.

Joe Wright made a great one-on-one save from Alex Parsons, but the game appeared to be up for Town when another clinical finish on the break - Ajiboye again weaving some magic down the left and finishing in some style after 63 minutes - appeared to have taken the game away from the hosts. But, to their credit, the effort was still there and, after Bricknell had been unnecessarily manhandled on his way into the visitors’ box, he made no mistake from the spot himself to throw Town an unlikely lifeline on 71 minutes. But that evaporated ten minutes from time when, after another good move down the left, the ball was squared to Zack Newton, who finished with clinical coolness. The icing on the cake was applied a few minutes later, fittingly, by Ajiboye’s second of the night, to leave Town with much to contemplate; from good start to disastrous finish.
