FAAL DOUBLE SETS TOWN ON THEIR WAY

Enfield Town 4 Wingate & Finchley 1

Muhammadu Faal scored his first two goals for Town on Boxing Day and subsequently scooped the home man of the match award.

Once another early goal had gone in, this time after nine minutes, helping to settle the nerves and shake off the rust of a long lay-off from league action, the game was relatively straightforward, but not without a couple of twists and turns on the way.

With Remi Sutton and Sam Chaney both unavailable and Lewis Taaffe still recovering from surgery, Mickey Parcell switched to left back with Sam Youngs coming in wide on the right. After Billy Bricknell and Ryan Blackman had both had fierce shots charged down, Blackman won the ball on the byline on the hosts’ left and played a slide-rule pass towards the near post for Faal to flick home and open his Town goal account. There was some Wingate “debate“ with referee Alex Rayment which ended with a yellow card for Ahmet Rifat.

A clearance from Loic Hernandez went straight to Faal but he shot wide. Then Rob Laney for the visitors had the first of three first half headers which, on another day, may have caused Town more problems than they did. He was initially narrowly off target following a cross from the left, but fine margins were demonstrated again when shortly afterwards at the opposite end a fine pass inside by Bricknell played in Faal, who skipped past Sean Cronin’s challenge and dinked the ball past keeper Shane Gore.

Laney headed narrowly wide again after 23 minutes, while Faal was denied a first half hat-trick by Gore’s fingertips. Laney was again unlucky shortly before the break with his final header of the half.

Half-time: Enfield Town 2 Wingate & Finchley 0

Wingate came out for the second period with all guns blazing and reduced the arrears with a goal within five minutes which had an element of familiarity about it from one or two earlier matches at the QEII Stadium this season. After possession had been conceded, the lively David Manu picked the ball up in a central position midway inside the Town half, ran into the inside-right channel past a couple of defenders and cracked a low shot past Joe Wright. The Blues’ thoughts of getting back into the game were eradicated in an instant, however, when Faal was clearly tugged back in the area and the referee pointed to the spot after a few seconds’ consideration. Bricknell squeezed in his spot kick low via Gore's outstretched hand.

Bricknell shot wide after the ball had rebounded off Youngs, while Town’s rearguard did well to clear a dangerous cross from Luke Ifil. An inswinging corner into the hosts’ penalty area ended with the ball dropping onto the roof of Wright’s net before Town embellished their second half dominance with a simple goal which was the product of two substitutes: Bilal Sayoud advanced down the left and pulled the ball back for Junior Mubiayi to head home.

There was still time to increase the lead, but a Bricknell cross-cum shot drifted behind and Mubiayi missed the target from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Enfield Town: Joe Wright, Sam Hatton, Mickey Parcell, Matt Johnson, Marc Weatherstone, Dan Rumens, Sam Youngs (Junior Mubiayi 80), Ryan Blackman, Billy Bricknell, Muhammadu Faal (Josh Davison 84), Aaron Greene (Bilal Sayoud 77). Unused subs: Rian McLean, Bradley Empson.
