Season finishes with away point
By Ken Brazier
Merstham 1 Enfield Town 1
This mid-table end-of-season encounter ended with the spoils shared, on a wet surface on a chilly day which looked and felt anything but end-of-season.
In truth, there was little incident in the first half, although there were some lively passages of play. Sam Youngs' left-foot snapshot was saved low down by home keeper Ashlee Jones and, at the opposite end, Dan Rumens got in a timely tackle on Charlie Penny as he was about to shoot following Kershaney Samuels’ pass. Tutu Henriques headed a Youngs’ corner clear and Aaron Greene fired well off target. Joe Wright gathered a dangerous-looking Reece Hall free-kick high above his head and Jones collected Greene’s cross-cum-shot.
Just beyond the half hour mark Simon Cooper’s deflected shot was saved by Wright, before the hosts’ full-back was shown a yellow card for some rough treatment on Greene. Adam Martin got into a good position at the far post following a set piece and played the ball back into the danger area but Jones was able to grab the ball. The half ended with a Brad Wadkins header, again saved by Jones.
Half-time: Merstham 0 Enfield Town 0
Matt Johnson was the first to test Jones after the break, and a Ryan Blackman free-kick was just over the top. On 73 minutes, Sam Youngs jinked his way through a couple of challenges and shot narrowly wide, before the Moatsiders’ Tom Kavanagh saw his low shot saved by Wright. In the 79th minute, having defended well for long periods, Merstham broke and a good ball in from the left saw Kavanagh control the ball and take his chance well with a clinical finish.
There appeared to be no way back for Town as chances had been at a premium, coupled with a well-drilled home back line but, to their credit and not for the first time this season, they refused to accept defeat and attacked strongly during the last ten minutes. Youngs had another shot charged down, while Liam Hope’s forehead was inches from connecting with a fine cross from Greene. But with the game entering stoppage time, there was time for one final attack and a loose ball was blasted into the net through a crowd of players by Dan Rumens for the equaliser.
