DISAPPOINTING END TO HOME CAMPAIGN
Enfield Town 0 Worthing 1
There was plenty of effort on display in Town’s final home game of the season but little in terms of end product. One clinical finish was the difference between the two sides on the day.
The game swung in favour of the visitors relatively early on. After a low free-kick from Mickey Parcell on the right had been missed at the far post by both Brad Wadkins and Dan Rumens, on nine minutes, a great run from the halfway line by Ryan Blake saw him bear down on goal with only Lucas Covolan to beat. But the visitors' keeper made a vital block with his legs, and then bravely smothered a follow-up attempt by Sam Youngs.
Within three minutes, at the opposite end, Worthing's Zack Newton flicked the ball past Samir Bihmoutine and found himself in a very similar central position. He opted to take the ball around an exposed Joe Wright, and then kept his cool to apply a decisive finish.
Wadkins set up Aaron Greene for Town, but he blazed over. Then Reece Myles-Meekums was thwarted by a great tackle by Bihmoutine just as he was about to shoot. Shortly before the break, Newton and Jared Rance combined well but were crowded out by the home defence. Then, soon after Worthing had hit the woodwork, Covolan made an impressive one-handed stop to keep out a deflected effort from Youngs.
Half-time: Enfield Town 0 Worthing 1
Rance fired narrowly wide as Worthing attempted to put the result beyond doubt after the break, and Wright was forced to make a couple of terrific saves to keep Town in it. The second of these showed incredible reactions to keep out Kieron Pamment's point-blank header.
After successive headers, by Dan Rumens and Mat Mitchel-King, from set pieces had failed to trouble Covolan unduly, Blake was inches from making contact with his head at the far post from a Youngs corner on the Town right after 77 minutes.
A few minutes later, after Wadkins’ header from Ryan Blackman’s free kick had been saved relatively comfortably by Covolan, substitute Dernell Wynter toe-poked narrowly wide after he had wrestled has way clear of the attentions of a couple of Rebels defenders just inside the box and made room for himself for a shot. But the game ended with another fine save by Wright as the curtain fell on Town’s penultimate game of the season.
