Tanners grind out deserved win
Enfield Town 0 Leatherhead 1
With very little flowing football on view, not helped by a fierce wind throughout, this game was decided by a first half free kick which found its way past Joe Wright via the home defensive wall. Having won 2-0 at Fetcham Grove in November, Leatherhead duly completed a double over their hosts in relative comfort, despite the narrow scoreline. For Town, after a couple of recent encouraging results, this was a disappointing step backwards.
After a scrappy opening fifteen minutes, with half-chances at either end, Enfield’s Sam Youngs had the ball in the visitors’ net, but he had been flagged offside in the build-up. The visitors’ impressive loanee keeper Manny Agboola collected a high ball under pressure from Ryan Blake as Town’s attack tried to get going. A couple of minutes later, Ryan Blackman raced through but, with only Agboola to beat, but his left foot effort was tipped over the bar by the young keeper. For the Tanners, a cross from the left just eluded Tom Derry as they continued to look dangerous on the break.
Tom Richards tested Joe Wright around the half hour mark before, a few minutes later, having conceded an unnecessary free kick near the edge of their own box in a central position, Town were made to pay when Richards drove the ball low past the depairing dive of Wright with the aid of a deflection. As the half drew to a close, Jack Midson played a dangerous ball into the Town box but there were no grey shirts on hand to take advantage.
Half-time: Enfield Town 0 Leatherhead 1
Town had the wind at their backs in the second period, but still struggled to make much headway. Blake and Liam Hope had efforts kept out by Agboola while, at the other end, Midson beat Taofiq Olomowewe to a through ball but then drilled his shot wide. Meanwhile, Blake was again thwarted by Agboola before Hope lofted the ball into the Tanners’ net, but again from an offside position.
Dan Gallagher screwed an effort wide for Leatherhead as they looked to make the game safe. Derry and D’Sean Theobald had late chances but in truth the points had looked in the bag for some time. Town’s next two games, weather permitting, at Burgess Hill Town and Dorking Wanderers are now assuming a greater significance.
