Poor away run continues
Leatherhead 2 Enfield Town 0
It was a straightforward victory for the Tanners at Fetcham Grove as they came through their final match before their FA Cup 2nd Round trip to Wycombe next Sunday. In contrast, Town haven’t won away in the league since August and have some tough games coming up.
The visitors welcomed back Dam Rumens after injury and Sam Youngs was available again. Aaron Greene remained sidelined with a knee injury. On a cold, bright afternoon the hosts went on the offensive and Sean Clohessy’s cut-back from the byline on the right was headed clear by Adam Martin. Elliot Benyon played in Mario Noto but he was flagged offside. On ten minutes, a Darren Purse free-kick found Benyon at the back post but he fired over.
Both D’Sean Theobalds and Liam Nash had shots blocked and, shortly afterwards, Theobalds latched onto a loose ball and drew a fairly comfortable save from Joe Wright. On twenty minutes a deep Youngs free kick found Benyon and his downward header was gathered by home keeper Zaki Oualah without too much difficulty.
Youngs fired well over the top and Mickey Parcell’s dangerous cross was well anticipated and dealt with by Oualah. Neither Simon Thomas not Taylor McKenzie could convert a Youngs corner, and the final action of a rather low-key first half saw player-manager Sammy Moore fire just wide for Leatherhead following a neat build up.

Early on in the second period one of the few clear chances to come Town’s way came and went when Thomas couldn’t capitalise on a good cross from Benyon on the right. Then, in the 54th minute, Town were undone by a rare glimpse of quality in the final third from either side when Niall McManus found himself in sufficient space to be able to control the ball and curl a fine left foot shot past Wright into the bottom corner.
Approaching the hour mark the Tanners might have increased their lead but Moore hit a post and Wright grabbed the rebound. McKenzie’s header was kept out by a combination of Oualah and the impressive Yannis Ambroisine. Parcell and Rumens both tried their luck from distance, saved and off-target respectively, before a horrendous defensive mix up settled the outcome of the game when McManus was eventually free to steal in at the far post and net from close range.
Nash got past Ryan Blackman to shoot just wide and then Wright saved from Theobalds. Despite a number of substitutions, there was little further action of note before the final whistle sounded. Manager Andy Leese will be looking for a significant improvement at Folkestone Invicta on Tuesday night (28th November).
