A Grim Night At Fetcham Gove

There were few Town positives to come out of the 1-4 hammering at Kingstonian on Monday. Mark Kirby and Jack Hockney came into the starting eleven, replacing the injured John Kyriacou and unwell Aaron Greene respectively.

Ks had signed three new players hours before the match and all were prominent in the match. Two loanees from Billericay Town – Louie Theopanous and Leo Chambers – and one permanent arrival from Greenwich Borough - Tom Beere – pepped up the Ks squad sufficiently for them to produce what home supporters described as an unrecognisable performance in comparison with their last half a dozen league games, during which time they had not scored a goal.

It was Theophanous who netted within the first five minutes to put Town on the back foot almost immediately when, having blazed over the bar a couple of minutes earlier, he picked up a pass inside from the hosts’ left hand side and picked his spot past Joe Wright with an accurate, low, right footed drive. Noel Mbo fired wide from an angle to give Town’s rearguard another anxious moment after ten minutes and shortly afterwards a rare error from Joe Wright went unpunished after he missed a dangerous cross from the impressive Andrew Msungu. Beere skewed an effort high and wide.

Town appeared to be finding the heavy pitch difficult, but Ks seemingly had no such problems, attacking with pace and intensity. After Taylor McKenzie had headed wide from a Sam Youngs free-kick and Youngs’ header had flown narrowly over the top from Ryan Blackman’s cross, it was 2-0 three minutes before the break when the pacy Noel Mbo was allowed to carry the ball a considerable distance down the Town right to finish well and put the hosts on top.

Experienced striker Andre McCollin made it three in the 53rd minute after he had sprung the offside trap. Town were thrown a potential lifeline a minute later when Kingstonian conceded a penalty with a foul on Mickey Parcell and Ryan Blackman netted from the spot, but this turned out to be no more than a consolation.

Wright made a couple of good saves to keep the score within the bounds of respectability, but it wasn’t long before another fast break after 62 minutes ended with a deflected shot from substitute Dennis Oli, who had featured for Thurrock against Town back in November, which finished the game as a contest. Parcell had a good shot saved by Rob Tolfrey in the home goal while, at the other end, Kingstonian rattled the angle of post and crossbar. Ryan Blake hit the woodwork from close range after Youngs’ shot had been parried by Tolfrey and Beere’s shot was kept out by Wright as the game entered stoppage time. There can be few complaints about the margin of the defeat, and Town’s faithful will be looking for vastly improved performances in their next couple of matches, against Merstham and Tonbridge Angels at the QEII Stadium.
