Town pegged back by late equaliser
Enfield Town 1 Wingate & Finchley 1
It looked as though Joe Wright’s magnificent penalty save towards the end of this dour game had secured three points for his side but Wingate sub Afolabi Obafemi netted in the 88th minute to grab a point for the visitors. Town were missing Aaron Greene (knee) and Dan Rumens (ankle) from Saturday’s starting line-up.
In a match low on quality, not helped by a swirling wind, a draw was probably about the right outcome. Sean Cronin headed clear a dangerous Mario Noto free kick in the early stages and Darren Purse’s header was off target from a corner. Drew Roberts fired wide after he had latched onto a poor defensive header and Elliot Benyon couldn’t quite convert Simon Thomas’ flick on. Joe Wright gathered Ben Pattie’s free kick comfortably in the 27th minute and, a minute later, Benyon’s header was cleared off the line by Nathan Mavila.
Town got their reward in the 40th minute. After some ludicrous wrestling in the six yard box had gone unpunished by referee Gerry Heron, Noto’s corner was turned in by Benyon from close range with the aid of a deflection off a Wingate defender. Simon Thomas headed a cross from Mickey Parcell wide for the final action of the half.
Half-time: Enfield Town 1 Wingate & Finchley 0
Wright was soon in action after the break when he made a couple of saves; a Mavila shot and a Cronin header from the subsequent corner. Cronin then blazed over when well placed and, in after 72 minutes, Ben Martin’s low ball in from the right flew just beyond the onrushing Simon Thomas. Rob Laney’s effort was well blocked by Purse but, with ten minutes left, the Town centre-back conceded a penalty. Wright somehow managed to tip Cronin’s blasted kick onto the bar and the hosts were reprieved. Not for long however, as a break down the right by Reece Beckles-Richards was converted from close in by Obafemi with two minutes left on the clock.
Steve Wales came on for his first appearance since August, against his old club, following injury and Parcell aimed to play him in but his through ball was too long. Wright made another save at the death when he tipped an effort from Ahmet Rifat around the post on a disappointing and frustrating night.
