An improved display but no points
Staines Town 3 Enfield Town 2
Manager Andy Leese made a number or changes to the starting line up at Wheatsheaf Park, and there was a good deal of improvement on show but, frustratingly, nothing in the way of points by the end of the night. Darren Purse was made skipper against one of his former clubs.
Ryan Blake had a glorious chance in the very first minute when he beat the offside trap, but Staines keeper Liam Driscoll raced off his line and came out on top in the subsequent one on one. The Swans then saw a corner from Max Worsfold half cleared to Wadha Ahmidi, whose shot was wide of the mark.
Mickey Parcell had a left foot shot off target after a strong run but Town were living dangerously at the back on occasion with a number of balls played in from wide areas causing problems. Blake was a whisker away from getting onto the end of an inviting low cross from Sam Youngs as the game continued to be open and end-to-end. Blake soon returned the compliment and it was Youngs’ turn to shoot wide.
Elliot Buchanan fired wide from Worsfield’s pass and then Joe Wright made a great instinctive save from the same player. Dan Rumens fired way wide from distance and the prominent Worsfield was then similarly wayward after being set up by Lewis Driver. Montell Moore blazed over and then, at the opposite end, Wright made a good save low down to keep out Tommy Brewer’s header. Wright needed treatment after a collision just before the break when, surprisingly, the sides turned round goalless.
Half-time: Staines Town 0 Enfield Town 0
Town got the second period off to the worst possible start when, in the 47th minute, Worsfield beat Parcell on the Swans’ left and crossed to the far post where Buchanan was waiting to convert emphatically. But it wasn’t long before Town found themselves level when, three minutes later, Moore’s low cross from the right touchline was netted by Drew Roberts from close range.
A deflected effort from Blake hit Driscoll’s right-hand post as Town pressed, but Purse then needed to make a vital block to keep out Worsfield. Roberts was brought down from behind by Tyrell Miller-Rodney in a promising position but the subsequent free-kick came to nothing. Mario Noto fired wide but then the hosts re-took the lead when Ryan Blackman lost the ball in midfield and the ball was played forward quickly to Mo Bettamer to net with aplomb with twenty minutes left on the clock.
Roberts managed to flick the ball over Driscoll but Ben Martin was on hand to clear the danger. Wright made another significant save when he kept out Worsfield again, and then both Youngs and Rumens were off target. Following a glut of substitutions, Parcell played the ball into the danger area and Aaron Greene was on hand with a good strike to bring the scores level once again. But, with only a minute left, man-of-the match Worsfield cracked a left foot drive past Noto and Wright to seal the win. Town may have gained a point on another night, but on clear chances can have few complaints.
Kingstonian’s progress in the FA Trophy means our scheduled league visit to Fetcham Grove on 11th November is postponed.
