Second half improvement edges it for Town
Enfield Town 2 Leatherhead 1
A blustery wind hampered both sides during the opening period, with neither side able to get a foothold in the game for any length of time.
Billy Crook had an early shot saved by Tanners keeper Louis Wells, who was soon in action again, coming off his line to gather the ball ahead of Karl Oliyide.
Leatherhead, looking well organised, took a deserved lead in the 19th minute when a square ball from the left found Jerome Federio who lobbed the ball out of Nathan McDonald's reach for the game's opener. Soon afterwards, Dernell Wynter found Karl Oliyide on the edge of the Tanners' box, but he couldn't quite set up Crook and the ball was cleared by Jerry Nnamani
Town suffered a blow when midfielder Crook had to go off after he picked up a leg injury, and the visitors continued to enjoy their fair share of possession. But Town had some promnising moments; man of the match Mickey Parcell's shot from Wynter's pass was comfortably saved by Wells in the 28th minute and then he couldn't quite get onto the end of an inviting cross from Ricky Gabriel
The half had precious little goalmouth action until the latter stages but, after Wells had gathered a couple of straightforward attempts from distance, Parcell burst through and was brought down by the keeper who, luckily but correctly, saw yellow rather than red as there was a covering defender. The free kick came to nothing, however, and the final action of a disjointed half saw Kadell Daniel fire narrowly off target for the visitors.
Half-time: Enfield Town 0 Leatherhead 1
There was much more purpose about Town's play after the break, and Oliyide was soon firing wide from Wynter's pass. Tyler Campbell had come on for Samir Bihmoutine at the break, and the hosts found themselves level on the hour mark. Campbell's well-flighted free kick from the left found the head of Ricky Gabriel, who was glaringly unmarked in the box and he had time to direct his header into the net.
In the 68th minute, Leatherhead's Kadell Dabiel fired narrowly wide, but Town were pressing more often and had the upper hand ten minutes later when, after Wells had done well to tip over a drive from Wynter, Oliyide charged down the right and delivered a high cross which eluded a clutch of players in a crowded box. Campbell controlled the loose ball, took a step forward and coolly placed his effort beyond a couple of retreating defenders for the winner. Wells then denied Wynter again at the death with another good save.
This was a hard-fought and deserved win from a goal down. Leatherhead did well in the first half, but rarely threatened in the second.
