TOWN GRIND OUT WIN
Enfield Town secured their first league win of season by digging deep against VCD Athletic for a 1-0 win at the QEII Stadium on Tuesday night
Michael Kalu coming in for his first start this term in place of Corey Whitely was the only change to the team that started at Bury on Saturday. It was a tentative start by both sides. Nathan Livings had a shot saved by Nick Blue in the VCD goal and then a promising breakaway move for Town broke down. As it turned out, the only goal of the game came in the 19th minute when Robbie Martin played a diagonal ball to Tyler Campbell (pictured), who controlled and shot firmly into the net past Blue, who got a hand to it to no avail.
Three minutes later, Campbell had another run but his effort was blocked by Ahmed Deen for a corner. VCD were coming more into the game at this point and a number of eye-catching runs by Elliot Cox and Ellis Green were causing Town problems down both flanks. Indeed, VCD had the ball in the back of the Enfield net in the 35th minute but it was ruled out for offside. Then it was Town’s turn to net and it not to count; this time a foul was given against Mark Kirby as he climbed to head down for Liam Hope to turn the ball in.

Nathan McDonald made a fine tip-over save from Green early in the second half, and then Taylor Hastings got in a great covering tackle as VCD piled on some pressure. VCD had a penalty shout turned down and then McDonald, who was later named man-of-the-match, made a couple of crucial saves to preserve Town’s slender lead. First he tipped over a shot from James Duckworth and then he smothered the ball low down from the subsequent corner.
Brad Quinton, on for Jordan Lockie, had a shot saved in the 70th minute and Tyler Campbell tried his luck with his left foot but was off target. The final crucial moment of the night came right on 90 minutes when VCD had the ball in the Enfield net, but the linesman’s flag had gone up during the build-up. So, three precious points were ultimately earned in a very tight contest.
