Town exit Middlesex Senior Cup as poor run continues
Enfield Town 1 Hampton & Richmond Borough 2 - report by Aaron Patel
Town exited this season’s Middlesex Senior Cup following a 2-1 defeat against Hampton & Richmond in heavy rain throughout.
Three minutes played, and Brendan Kiernan saw his flashing effort just wide of goal for H&RB. Barely a minute later, Drew Roberts similarly saw his snap-shot comfortably saved by Samuel Howes in the visitors' goal.
In the 12th minute the Beavers were in front. A misunderstanding in Town’s back-line saw Brendan Kiernan intercept a poor back pass and, with Joe Wright exposed, he set up Max Kretzschmar to tap into an empty net. Ten minutes later
Kretzschmar again found himself with only Wright to beat but the keeper managed to save his low-driven effort on goal as he diverted the ball out for a corner.
As the game reached the half-hour mark, with conditions becoming more and more slippery, Wright made a couple of further saves, including one to deny Kiernan after a great run had seen him beat a couple of defenders but his shot lacked sufficient power.
Half-time: Enfied Town 0 Hampton & Richmond Borough 1
Town improved after the break, but lacked the finishing touch. The visitors were impressive, closing down effectively. Mickey Parcell's effort cleared the Beavers' crossbar just beyond the hour mark, but chances were at a premium. In the 73rd minute Kretzschmar doubled the H&RB lead, as he made it 2-0 following a half-cleared cross from the left from Malachi Napa.
Town continued to search for a route back into the tie but with time against them substitute Ryan Blake found space down the right and pulled the ball back for Youngs, whose effort was smothered by Howes on the slippery surface. With barely a minute to go another sub Simon Thomas hit a post from a cross delivered by Blake. Two minutes into stoppage time an own-goal from Richmond’s Charlie Wassmer following Parcell's ball into the box provided scant consolation for Town.
