Town 4 Whyteleafe 1
Pre-season joy for Town - match report by Aaron Patel
Town continued their pre-season with a 4-1 home victory over Bostik League South side Whyteleafe yesterday (Saturday).
The opening ten minutes were widely dominated by Town. Three minutes in, Ryan Blake could not quite connect with a floated ball into the box; any contact and a goal was certain. With a number of registered players unavailable, one of Town's many Trialists on view saw two headed efforts denied. Simon Thomas would also head his effort just wide of the goal.
Twenty minutes in and Whyteleafe managed to find some rhythm, Andrew Musungu slipped in behind the Town backline. However he could not find his bearings, allowing Town to make amends and clear their lines.
Ten minutes later, on the half an hour mark, Ryan Blake opened the scoring, rounding the goalkeeper to slot into an empty net, to give Town a 1-0 lead. Just moments later Town almost doubled their lead, a Trialist heading just wide once again.
Five minutes before half-time, Whyteleafe saw another rare sight of goal. Lanre Azeez caught the Town backline napping once again as he slipped in behind, however he failed to convert the opportunity.
Just five minutes after the restart, Mickey Parcell glanced in a header to give Town a 2-0 lead. A corner was swung in and Parcell headed the ball in off the bar, to double the Town's lead.
Four minutes after Parcell's goal, Whyteleafe were awarded a penalty. Lanre Azeez was brought down inside the box, and referee Chris Bodell pointed to the spot. Sam Clayton subsequently stepped up and converted the spot-kick pulling one back for Whyteleafe, making it 2-1.
Just before the hour mark Town restored their two-goal advantage, making it 3-1. A Trialist was on hand to score a tap-in after good work from Ryan Blake, who worked to create the space from the right.
Seconds after Town restored their lead they were close to extending it. Once more a Trialist got in behind the Whyteleafe defence, but saw his low driven effort saved by keeper Matt Pierson.
With fifteen minutes to play Town wrapped up their second pre-season victory. Another Trialist was on hand to convert a tap-in to make it 4-1.
Town starting XI: Joe Wright, Trialist, Danny Rumens, Rob Bartley, Darren Purse, Jack Higgs, Trialist, Kreshnic Krasniqi, Ryan Blake, Simon Thomas, Trialist. Subs: Drew Roberts, Mickey Parcell and 4 trialists.
