Lacklustre Town exit FA Trophy
Royston Town 2 Enfield Town 0
On a mild but breezy afternoon on a lush surface at Garden Walk, Town failed to do themselves justice with a below-par performance against a workmanlike Royston Town, who thoroughly deserved their victory.
In truth, there were very few clear cut chances created by either side, but Town in particular had a bad day at the office. In the tenth minute, Taylor McKenzie and Adam Martin both just failed to get on the end of an inviting ball delivered into the Crows’ penalty box while, at the opposite end, Joe Wright tasted his first action of the afternoon when he kept out a firm effort from James Potton.
Adam Murray headed a cross from Lee Chappell wide as the hosts began to enjoy more possession. Former Stevenage man Adam Marriott was way off target on the half-hour mark, but the warning signs were there for the visitors. Veteran striker John Frendo then just failed to get on the end of a ball which had been flicked on from a Chappell corner kick.
Town’s first on target attempt arrived shortly before the break when a Mario Noto free kick was tipped over by home keeper Joe Welch. As half time approached, Joe Wright came off his line through a crowd of players to deal with a cross from Gus Scott-Morriss but only succeeded in pushing the ball out as far as Potton, whose initial effort was blocked by Darren Purse with Marriott burying the rebound. Ryan Blake collided with Welch soon afterwards and both players required treatment. A good delivery from Aaron Greene was then cleared by Ed Asufu-Adjaye as Simon Thomas closed in.
Half-time: Royston Town 1 Enfield Town 0
Marriott had a couple of further off-target efforts for the Crows early on in the second period as Town struggled to get a foothold in the game, and they were left with a mountain to climb when home man of the match Potton galloped through in acres of space and applied a low emphatic finish past Wright on 65 minutes.
Both sides made a number of substitutions and Town came more into the game in the last twenty minutes or so, but the damage had already been done. Drew Roberts fired over, Purse headed wide and Montell Moore tried his luck from a tight angle on the left, but Welch clawed his effort behind and to safety. Ben Ward-Cochrane accelerated down the left-hand side but ran the ball out of play.
After a disappointingly flat display, Town will be looking forward to league action at Staines Town on Tuesday (31st October).
