Highgate United 0 Enfield Town 3
Another good pre-season work out
Town travelled to the West Midlands for this commemorative friendly, fifty years on from the FA Amateur Cup meeting between Highgate United and the former Enfield FC.
With striker Simon Thomas taking the captain’s armband for the day, Town picked up from where they left off at Cheshunt on Tuesday night with some fluent attacking moves from the outset, following a minute's silence to mark the passing of a Highgate founder member Fred Drennan.
Danny Rumens shot over the top from an early corner and then Drew Roberts tested home keeper Brad Hayward. In the 18th minute a well struck free-kick from a home trialist just cleared the Town bar with keeper Joe Wright at full stretch.
Town were awarded a penalty for handball against Trevor Edwards and Roberts buried the spot kick low to Hayward’s right on 22 minutes. Shortly afterwards, Wright saved from Highgate’s Connor Mooney while, at the opposite end, a Ralston Gabriel shot deflected off Scott Turner and eluded Hayward’s right hand for the visitors’ second.
Turner then did well to get in the way of another Gabriel effort and Hayward collected successfully this time. Highgate kept pressing and had reasonable shouts for a penalty when Wright appeared to impede Mooney as the two players chased a loose ball in the Town box, but the referee was unmoved.
As the break approached, Steve Wales crossed from the right and a Roberts shot deflected onto the ‘Gate crossbar with Hayward beaten. And it was 3-0 on 40 minutes when Roberts reacted quickly to bury a ball at the far post after a long throw from Krehniq Krasniqi had been flicked on by Thomas.
Edwards shot just over for Highgate as the half time whistle sounded.
Darren Purse did well to intercept an effort from Aaron Brown as the hosts went on the offensive after the restart. Town brought on three substitutes as the half progressed, but ‘Gate continued in the ascendancy.
Harley Haag shot over for Town and then a home substitute was just wide as the hosts searched for the goal that their spirited display probably merited.
Sam Youngs shot over and Hayward got to another Wales cross ahead of the onrushing Haag. The final action of the match saw Purse get in the way of another effort from Brown as the referee called time on to an end-to-end encounter, which saw Town, having effectively won the game in the opening half, take their foot off the gas a little after the break and Highgate, two pyramid steps below Town, look impressive.
