Enfield Town 2 Barnet 1 – pre-season friendly

On a sweltering afternoon Town did well to see off a lively Barnet XI at the QES on Saturday.

A healthy 383 crowd witnessed and end-to-end game, and saw Town on the attack early on. Good interplay between Corey Whitely, Tyler Campbell and Ricky Gabriel ended with a save from visiting keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle and then Whitely again tested the keeper soon afterwards.

A trip in the home penalty box after ten minutes gave Barnet’s Shaun Batt the opportunity to notch the opening goal, but his spot-kick was well saved by Nathan McDonald diving to his right.

In the 18th minute, Whitely skipped past Darnell Smith but rolled his shot wide of an upright. This was followed by a minute’s applause in memory of young Barnet supporter Chris East, who sadly passed away on 19th March.

Ten minutes before the break, Batt made amends for his penalty miss when an attack down the left ended with him strongly holding off a challenge and burying the ball past McDonald.

Town levelled a couple of minutes before the break when Mark Kirby’s superb dummy let in Whitely on the left, and he cut inside to smash the ball in via the underside of the bar.

Half-time: Enfield Town 1 Barnet 1

The second half opened in somewhat unexpected style when, two minutes in, Ricky Gabriel strode down the left and eventually found himself with only McKenzie-Lyle to beat, and he did so with aplomb, rolling the ball in with his right foot.

The heat took its toll in the second period as, in addition to drinks breaks, a plethora of substitutions broke up the flow of the game, but there were still near misses at either end; none more so than when a Bees attack ended with a lob over Town sub goalkeeper Bobby Fannela, (who went on to make a fine double-save later), which only cleared the crossbar by inches.

Town starting XI: Nathan McDonald, Jordan Lockie, Ricky Gabriel, Curtis Ujah, Mark Kirby, Merrick James-Lewis, Mickey Parcell, Billy Crook, Corey Whitely, Harry Ottaway, Tyler Campbell. Subs: Connor Bolton, Tayshan Hayden-Smith, Nigel Neita, Nathan Livings, Claudiu Vilcu, Vance Bola, Stan Muguo, Nikki Ahamed, Bobby Fannela.
