Town visit Beveren in return friendly
By Ciaran Glennon
Enfield Town took a historic step into Europe playing their first game on the continent in a return friendly against fellow fans owned YB SK Beveren
Beveren travelled to Enfield in last season's warm up and this time round the Towners made the journey with over a hundred supporters desperate to be present for the game.
With the emphasis very much on 'friendly' both sets of supporters renewed old friendships and turned the game into a party atmosphere. It was competitive though but with Liam Hope scoring a free kick early on Beveren were always on the back foot. The game continued to be competitive with both teams making full use of the fixture to prepare for the coming season.
Neil Cousins gave Town a second before Beveren had the ball in the Town net but ruled out for off side. Corey Whitely rattled Beveren's woodwork, and Nathan Livings had a shot saved by Beveren's Carsten Van Damme. The teams turned around with the score 2-0, but Town struck again, this time from Jamie Richards and Whitely sealed the win for Town late on.
But the real winner was friendship and the fans owned concept as both clubs, initially put in touch through Supporters Direct once again showed the true spirit of the game. YB Beveren President Andre Bolsens said 'We share the same values. The role of the supporter is important. They co own and take decisions in the club'.
Both sides will have taken positives from the game and will be looking forward to the coming season with the joint celebrations going on into the evening.
Town players and supporters paid a visit to the Menen Gate at Ypres on the journey home to mark the 100th Anniversary of the First World War. Town Chairman Paul Millington laid a wreath at the memorial in honour of Enfield Footballer Charles Blake and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the war to end wars.
