Under 10's Compete in Futsal Tournament

Each year the Capital Girls League hold a Futsal competition and this year, as last year, it was held at the Copper Box Arena, Olympic Park, Stratford on the weekend of 13/14 February. Futsal is very similar to a 5 a-side game, however, the ball is allowed to go over head height, and, players are allowed to enter the goalkeepers area.

The Under 10 (U10) competition was held on the 13 February with 9 teams having entered the competition. The teams were split into 2 groups, one of 5 teams and the other of 4 teams. Each team played each other once, with the winner of each group each going through to the final.

Enfield were entered in Group 1 which contained of 5 teams and our first game was against Camden Youth Athletic. We made the worst possible start when, following Camden's first shot which was saved by Macy our goalkeeper, we immediately contrived to present an open goal to their attacker who duly slotted the ball into the net. 1-0 down in less than a minute! What followed was a very even contest with both teams equally matched. However, we finally got a clear opportunity when the ball broke to Jessica who, although she had to run 2/3 of the length of the pitch, had a clear run on goal. With the Camden defenders racing back, Jessica kept the ball under control and coolly put it past the Camden keeper to make it 1-1. And despite further chances at both ends that's how the game finished.

Due to the way the matches were scheduled, after our first match we immediately had to play Broomfield. This match was very similar to our first match, with both sides attacking and defending in equal measure. Fine performances from Izzy at the back and Macy in goal keeping us in the game. Then half way through the game Chanel took control of the ball on the right and managed to put in a great cross. The ball fell to Lucia who blasted the ball into the goal giving the Broomfield keeper no chance. There followed a period of sustained pressure by Broomfield which our girls successfully defended until, with just a couple minutes to go, the ball broke to a Broomfield player who, on finding herself in some space, blasted the ball past our goalkeeper. With little time remaining nether team was able to break the deadlock and so our second game also ended in a 1-1 draw.

Our next match was against Ruislip Rangers. With Mia in defence, we were in control at the back, and this limited Ruislip to very few chances. However, despite good play from Isabelle, Chanel and Jessica in midfield and sterling work by Zoe up front we were unable to turn our advantage in possession into a goal. And so frustratingly we finished our third game with another draw.

Our final game was against Alexandra Park North (APY) and a win might, if other results went our way, put us into the final. The game started off with both sides seemingly matching each other. But then APY scored on the counterattack and despite our best efforts we were unable to equalise. As time passed by we pushed further forward and APY were able to score again on the counterattack. By now it was apparent that APY were a very good team that combined defensive solidity with pace on the counterattack which our girls were unable to match. APY then scored again to give them a deserved victory. APY then went onto the final losing 2-0 to Charlton.

This was a very enjoyable event and my thanks goes to the girls parents for their commitment in supporting the team. Also my thanks goes to all the staff at Middlesex FA for putting on a great event.
