Town ease through
Enfield Town 3 Phoenix Sports 0
Town soothed any nerves with two early goals to pave the way for their passage into Emirates FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round at the QES on Saturday. They were without Drew Roberts (injured) and John Kyriacou (unavailable).
Mario Noto's seventh minute cross from the right sailed over Phoenix keeper Steve Phillips, who went on to have a torrid half. Aaron Greene was soon bearing down on goal but his low shot was blocked by Danny Young. Sam Youngs had another shot blocked, but Town fans didn’t have to wait long for a second goal, a back-heel by Simon Thomas after Phillips had spilled a high ball under pressure.
Shortly afterwards Ryan Blake found himself free of the Sports back line, and he took the ball round the goalkeeper well but then, with options arriving in the box, he chose to go it alone at a tight angle and Zak Byron got back to avert the danger.
A free kick from the visitors’ Ashley Probets was safely gathered by Joe Wright, but Sports faced an uphill battle to get back into the game. Just beyond the half hour mark Greene had another shot saved by Phillips and soon afterwards Blake rounded the keeper but unluckily ran out of grass.

The second half began with Youngs blazing over the top and Phillips picking up a yellow card for rushing off his line and flattening Blake. Town’s man-of-the-match Ryan Blackman tried to set up Youngs, but the visitors’ penalty box was too crowded and, with twenty minutes to go, Thomas couldn’t convert from close range.
Blake expertly made room for himself before testing Phillips again low down, and then Sports rallied briefly when Frankie Sawyer’s effort was saved by Wright. As the final stages approached, Blake inexplicably put the ball over the bar following Mickey Parcell’s accurate square pass. Town were not easing up, however, and sub Ben Ward-Cochrane tested Phillips once more and the Mario Noto crashed a powerful shot against the underside of the crossbar.
Montell Moore scored the goal of the afternoon with three minutes remaining when he picked up the ball in space, surveyed his options as he drifted inside, and very coolly applied a side-foot finish to put the game to bed. There were further efforts from Ward-Cochrane and George Beattie, and Sports had a final attempt at a consolation goal from Dajon Golding, but in truth the margin of Town’s victory could have been even greater.
