Town see off Margate to record back to back league wins

Enfield Town 2 Margate 1 - match report by Aaron Patel

Town fought hard and were rewarded for their efforts, as they beat Margate 2-1 at QEII Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With less than minute gone Town were in front. Mickey Parcell, who was unmarked at the far post, slotted in a low ball from Aaron Greene on the left - the full-back giving Town the lead with just forty seconds on the clock.

Three minutes later Parcell almost doubled his tally when a good cross by Montell Moore was met by Parcell in a similar position, but his headed effort was just wide. On 8 minutes Moore’s effort was cleared off the line by Margate’s Ben Swift following a Sam Youngs corner. As the first half progressed, Margate began to slowly find their feet, and David Martin had their first attempt on goal, but his effort was deflected into Joe Wright’s grasp.

Town continued to look lively despite Margate’s revival. Moore had another attempt saved by keeper Patrick Lee in the 20th minute, as he continued to look lively throughout the first period. With the game half and hour old, Margate were finally establishing some rhythm. They were almost gifted a golden chance to equalise, as a free-kick evaded everyone inside the Town box, and only needed the faintest of touches. The closing moments of the first-half saw Greene’s cross put wide by Youngs and Taylor McKenzie’s sliding effort on the stretch from another Greene cross was diverted away for a corner. For ‘Gate Lee Prescott’s long range effort sailed over, as referee Neil Morrison blew his whistle to bring the first-half to a close.

Two minutes after the restart Matt Brodkin warmed Wright’s gloves with an effort that was relatively comfortable for the Town keeper. But after 51 minutes the visitors were rewarded for their persistence when Frannie Collin went for a driven ball from the left with Darren Purse in attendance and, after the goal had been originally recorded as an own goal, Collin was later credited with the equaliser as he stretched on the slide for Martin’s low pull-back.

The game’s intensity increased following Margate’s equaliser, as both sides began to go full throttle searching for the potentially decisive next goal. On the hour mark Margate nearly punished Town for switching off from a short corner. Tom
Wynter rose highest to win a header but saw his effort fly over. However just moments after Town were nearly went behind, they were back in front. On 63 minutes Taylor McKenzie headed the ball home from an in-swinging Youngs free-kick which was delivered superbly and Town were 2-1 up. Margate’s Matt Bodkin was replaced by Orlando Smith soon after the goal

With Town now working up some momentum, they searched for a third. Ryan Blackman decided to have a go from distance, and his effort was parried by Lee before he eventually grasped the loose ball. Both sides made some further substitutions, then with five minutes to play, Simon Thomas might have wrapped up the three points for Town, being played through and finding himself one-on-one with the keeper, but Lee came off his line to smother the ball. Then, two minutes from time, Harry Stannard’s header somehow drifted wide after a great cross from Martin.

This was a timely boost for Town as they look to make history next weekend at National League Maidstone United in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round on Saturday.
